Elon University students, faculty donate supplies to local homeless students

August 29, 2012

Members of the Elon University community reached beyond the brick walls, providing school supplies for more than 600 students designated as homeless in the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Jana Lynn Patterson, assistant vice president for student life, coordinated the project and encouraged those at the university to buy and donate supplies for those in need.  Designated collection boxes were set up on campus at the end of August.

“Hundreds of people donated thousands of items, and student volunteers have been working to collect the items,” Patterson said. “The community’s generosity has eased the burden of many children.”

Twenty students form SGA, Kernodle Center for Service Learning and women’s varsity volleyball team sorted and packed 76,675 donated items, including 144 backpacks, more than 48,000 sheets of paper, 311 composition books, more than 7,000 crayons and more than 1,000 personal care items, among other supplies deemed necessary for the start of the school year.

People throughout campus contributed to the school supplies drive. CC Cowan and Elon University moving and set-up crew helped load items Tuesday morning and delivered them to the ABSS office

Patterson is still accepting donations. To donate, call (336) 278-7200 and items will be picked up for a second delivery from Elon next week.
